CARAS Chairman’s Introduction  

Welcome to the new electronic CARAS Directory. With the introduction of the new CARAS database, the electronic directory will be continually updated without having the cost and input of updating a printed copy. We hope it will continue to be a useful reference for Fellows and Associates across the United Kingdom with the added convenience of being able to access it on your chosen electronic device anytime anywhere. In addition to providing ‘distinctive awards of merit for individuals concerned with the development of agriculture in all its aspects’ membership of CARAS presents opportunities for networking and fellowship within our industry - this Directory should continue to help achieve those objectives.

The Council of CARAS was reconstituted by the Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland, Royal Ulster Agricultural Society and Royal Welsh Agricultural Society in 1984 and then joined by the Royal Agricultural Society of England in 1991. Today these main agricultural societies representing the UK remain at the heart of CARAS with representatives from each Society appointed to Council and supporting the Fellows elected by the National Panels.

The challenges faced by our parent societies following the Covid pandemic were met head on. With an innovative approach and huge commitment from all those involved each organisation has not only survived but prospered. As with our National Council and Moderators Panel, some things are being done in different ways but at the end of the day, the core work of educating consumers about farming, food and the countryside through the many commercial and charitable activities is flourishing.

I had the privilege of attending CARAS receptions at the Balmoral, Royal Highland and Royal Welsh shows and the House of Lords in 2023 and was humbled listening to the citations of the Associates being presented. They were all thoroughly deserved as were those being elevated to Fellowship.

We need a continual flow of candidates to maintain the strength of CARAS. Associates and Fellows are the ears and eyes of CARAS and I encourage everyone to let their respective National Panel know of anyone you think is a suitable candidate.

I look forward to meeting many of you at CARAS events in the coming year.
